Safe Water, Better Sanitation, Healthier Communities: Our WASH Work
Precious Impact International | Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)
Clean water. A safe place to relieve oneself. The simple ability to wash hands. These aren’t small things — they are the foundation of human dignity, health and wellbeing. Yet for many communities we work alongside, they remain out of reach. At Precious Impact International (PII), our Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) work exists to close that gap.
Why WASH Is Foundational, Not Optional
It’s hard to overstate how much depends on access to safe water and sanitation. Children miss school because of preventable illness. Girls fall behind because their schools lack safe, private facilities. Families spend hours each day simply fetching water — time that could go toward education, work or rest.
WASH isn’t a standalone issue. It touches health, education, gender equality and economic opportunity all at once. That’s why we treat it as fundamental, not supplementary, to the wellbeing of any community.
What Our Work Looks Like
PII supports communities and institutions to improve access to WASH services, strengthen hygiene practices, and build sustainable WASH solutions that last well beyond any single project. Our programming focuses on:
- Safe water access — helping communities reach clean, reliable water sources.
- Sanitation — supporting safe, dignified sanitation facilities for households and institutions.
- Hygiene promotion — encouraging the everyday practices that prevent illness before it starts.
- Behaviour change — going beyond infrastructure to shift habits that protect health long-term.
- WASH in institutions — ensuring schools, health centres and other public spaces have the facilities people need.
- Community WASH systems — building local capacity to manage and maintain WASH infrastructure.
- Sustainable WASH solutions — designing for solutions communities can sustain themselves, not ones that fail once the funding ends.
Infrastructure Alone Isn’t the Answer
A borehole that breaks down after a year hasn’t solved anything. A latrine no one uses because of poor hygiene habits hasn’t either. That’s why our WASH work pairs infrastructure with education and local ownership — because lasting change depends on people, not just pipes.
This reflects our broader approach to impact: Reach → Quality → Outcomes → Sustainability → Systems Change. A water point only matters if it keeps working, keeps communities healthier, and keeps being maintained long after we’ve stepped back.
Communities Own Their Solutions
We don’t believe in solutions imposed from outside. Our WASH programmes are built with communities and institutions — strengthening local systems and capacity so that clean water and safe sanitation remain within reach, sustained by the people who depend on them every day.
Every Drop Matters
Behind every WASH statistic is a girl who can now stay in school through her whole cycle, a mother who no longer walks hours for water, a family protected from preventable disease. When we invest in WASH, we invest in dignity — and in every other opportunity that follows from it.
Be Part of This Story
Lasting WASH solutions take more than good intentions. They take partners who bring technical expertise, donors who fund sustainable infrastructure, volunteers who support hygiene education, and advocates who help others understand why access to clean water and sanitation still isn’t guaranteed for everyone.
